About this deal

Just have a look at something – the smallest, most trivial little thing – and enjoy trying to figure out how it works. This is another sumptuous book from Professor Cox in conjunction with the BBC tv series of the same name. I have enjoyed some of Chopra’s books in the past, but this book felt like it couldn’t decide whether it was a college physics textbook or new age positive thinking essay. But it has been a tremendous ascent into insignificance because, by the virtuous combination of observation and thought, we have been able to discover our place.

Human Universe by Professor Brian Cox | WHSmith

A galvanizing playbook for success from Steven Bartlett, one of the world’s most exciting entrepreneurs and the host of the No. It “created a cultural ratchet, an exponentiation of the known which ultimately led us to the stars”. Brian tells the story of how our innate human curiosity has led us from feeling that we are at the center of everything, to our modern understanding of our true place in space and time – that we are living 13. This is Human Universe (BBC2), and Brian is taking a giant leap, towards mankind, and questions such as: who are we, and what are we doing here? I loved the historical references, the history of our history not as nations or races but as humans, the reverence for the accumulation of knowledge for the sake of understanding a little bit more, while knowing we do not know so much, that we will wander forever not having all the answers, but seeking to understand because there is no better way to be, because belief is not knowledge.Keats accused Newton of destroying the poetry of the rainbow by explaining the origin of its colours.

Beliefs about men and women are as old as humanity itself, but Fine’s funny, spiky book gives reason to hope that we’ve heard Testosterone rex’s last roar. The periodic table, created in the early 1860s by Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, marked one of the most extraordinary advances in modern chemistry. As a global leader and pioneer in the field of mind-body medicine, Chopra transforms the way the world views physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social wellness. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. He is a member of the High Energy Physics group at the University of Manchester, and works on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland.

Human Universe (Audio Download): Professor Brian Cox, Andrew

I didn't watch the TV series - love the pictures/scenery but Prof Cox I find a bit too 'media friendly' (look, tone of voice, etc etc) so tend not to want to see science bastardised that way. Known as a prolific author of eighty books books with twenty-two New York Times best sellers in both fiction and non-fiction, his works have been published in more than forty-three languages. We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use. We are significant to ourselves as the only or one of the few emergent consciousnesses capable of understanding its own situation across vast tracts of space and time.signal, Drake equation and explains the ingredients needed for an intelligent civilization to evolve in the universe – the need for a benign star, for a habitable planet, for life to spontaneously arise on such a planet and the time required for intelligent life to evolve and build a civilization. Every question I've ever had about the universe was answered and explained in layman terms and I think that's what makes this book incredible. Apart from their too pat dismissal (contradicted by some of the data in the rest of the book) of the likelihood of our aloneness as emergent consciousness, there is nothing to argue with in their general conclusions - they have science at its best on their side.

Brian Cox does an amazing job presenting it – his enthusiasm and joy are written all over his face and you can hear it also in his voice. Hablar de este libro sin desvelar nada es un poco difícil, así que me quedo al otro lado de la línea y digo: ¡cuánto nos falta por llegar a comprender realmente qué es el universo! Professor Brian Cox takes readers out of this world and into a whole new dimension as he gives us a new perspective on human life. This book answers all of those big questions you've ever had about life, where we came from, why are we the lucky ones to have been created on one planet in such a vast universe, where life came from etc. It was this 'further investigation' that I found the most interesting, though I did greatly enjoy Cox's political interpositions. It is the sum of our literature, our music, our technology, our art, our philosophy, our history, our science, our knowledge. The book is full or amazing photographs and articles showing the amazing challenges and how we have excelled over them through the ages - from evolutionary imperatives to pushing the boundaries of our planet.
