As the unit is Software Defined Radio based with internal RTL chip hardware it is dependant heavily on filters (another story but you'll understand when you come across them) . In addition to the frequency selection the more expensive scanners often allow you to switch the mode between AM & FM. On the cheaper ones this is often done automatically and you can not change it. As an all-in-one unit (large display , decoding of DMR/NXDN/PROVOICE/P25 , Networking VOIP) i would say this unit is probably the best out there for its price range . All in all, it's a great scanner and I look forward to many years of fun with it. I hope to buy an SDS 100 soon so I can have a portable scanner as good as the SDS 200. It is important to decide what you want to listen to before buying a scanner - it is false economy to buy a cheaper one only to find later that it misses out some frequencies that you would like to listen to. Ideally make a list of all the frequencies you are likely to want to listen to and then see which of the scanners covers all of them.

When the Software Defined Scanners came along with uniden punching through the market with their flagship SDS100/200 I thought it was worth a shot .
