About this deal

The story is about Mr Fox and how he outwits his farmer neighbours to steal their food from right under their noses. I watched the movie yesterday, which led to me picking up the book as well to see whether it would hold up.

In 1970, before I was even born, Dahl wrote and published a story about a very cunning creature, you may even have seen one for yourself, the red fox. Mr Fox is an anthropomorphic, tricky, and clever fox who lives underground beside a tree with his wife and four children. Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of the President of the USA liked it so much he was invited to the White House and became friends with the President, Franklin D Roosevelt. Fox was recorded by the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and Odyssey Opera who were subsequently awarded the Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording.Dahl's publishers in the United States, France, and the Netherlands declined to incorporate the changes.

We all know that foxes are perceived to be shy and cunning creatures and in Fantastic Mr Fox he shows just how cunning he can be when he outwits three greedy, mean and cruel farmers who want to kill him! Children’s stories need to be fun, entertaining, memorable and easy to read so when it comes to children’s books and children’s authors one name always springs to mind that matches those qualities – Roald Dahl. My 11-year-old discovered it at her school's book fair, and when I peeked inside and saw the publication date of 1970, I did a happy dance. With the help of his friends Rabbit and Badger, he thinks up an ingenious plan to evade their shotguns and shovels… One of Roald Dahl’s most charismatic characters comes to flamboyant life in this best-loved novel – a true childhood essential. His first children's book was The Gremlins, about mischievous little creatures that were part of RAF folklore. Fox, made this a much reread volume, for my younger self, and it seems like nothing has changed over a decade later. So when they declare war on Mr Fox, who has been stealing their chickens and cider to feed the starving animals on the hillside, they mean business! mean that it gives reason for me to get yelled at by some idiot who can't understand just because the computer says we have something doesn't mean we really do (we don't have computers that know when someone has stolen something without our noticing it).

Working from his memory of the aboveground routes he has used, he and his children tunnel into Boggis's four chicken houses. At the end of the book, they are all sitting around the foxhole in the pouring rain while the animals have a great big banquet underneath them. Roald Dahl at his best - an oft overlooked story (at least until the film adaptation) this is lots of fun. If you have a book where the main character is a Fox, and people are going to praise him for being fantastic, he better. Here, they are nearly caught by Bean's servant Mabel and have an unpleasant confrontation with the cellar's resident, Rat. That's a fine message and one that kids probably won't be exposed to for the first time by reading this book.
