The technical storage or access is strictly necessary for the legitimate purpose of enabling the use of a specific service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user, or for the sole purpose of carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network. Mosse has a really fantastic writing style, making sure to include appropriate terms but not getting so technical that she loses her readers.

Having read and loved the first two novels in Mosse’s Burning Chambers series, I had high expectations of The Ghost Ship and, happily, was not disappointed. Consenting to these technologies will allow us to process data such as browsing behaviour or unique IDs on this site. Louise and Giles begin a relationship, which is modern and refreshing and everything it should be for a female captain in the 1600's looking to change the rules.A gorgeously written, utterly absorbing epic and, despite being set in the sixteenth century, has some very pertinent messages for our time about the evils of religious persecution and the transcendent power of love and family. Her past being slowly revealed through current events triggering suppressed memories is interesting and adds tension to the story. Ze is de eigenaar van het schip d’Oude Maen en moet door verscheidene omstandigheden Nederland zo snel mogelijk verlaten, samen met haar gezel Gilles. To say I loved the previous two novels in The Joubert Family Chroniclesby the multi-million bestselling author Kate Mosse is an understatement. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Being initially from Amsterdam, Louise has a love for boats and the sea, and she is close with Alis and Cornelia. I’ve read both the previous books in the series – The Burning Chambers and The City of Tears – as well as plenty more of Kate Mosse’s other books so I know she is a consummate storyteller and once again she doesn’t disappoint. I didn’t want to use the word swashbuckling, but you can’t not when your imagination runs wild, images of ships on the big seas battling it out to come out victorious.Het boek eindigt met een leuke cliffhanger en ik vraag me dan ook af als dan toch nog een vierde deel komt. Yet another banger from Kate Mosse and although part of trilogy series, can be enjoyed as a standalone novel. I didn't realize this was the third book in a series until after I'd bought it, but having read it that wasn't a problem. I know four stars may not seem like enough based on my review but for me it is a definite reread and there will be a physical copy with lots of notes and annotations in my future.

The Ghost Ship is peopled by the most wonderful characters, including Gilles, abused as a child, but now making the most of the opportunities Louise has given him. Louise is not interested in leading the life expected of upper class women of her day, either in Amsterdam (her birthplace), Carcassonne (so adored by her grandmother Minou), nor in La Rochelle (a haven for the Huguenots persecuted in Catholic France). I may have struggled with some descriptions and the general style of writing, but the characters and general concept made up for that, and therefore I would recommend this book. The Ghost Ship is sad, glorious, terrifying and wonderful — a must read if you enjoy historical fiction. Fantastic to have such a strong, brave female protagonist and to set much of the tale at sea was genius, adding a very different dimension.

Her quest to break the rules is heart-pounding and vibrant and taking the journey with Louise ,and following her adventure, is everything you could want in a pirate story. In France she meets Gilles, and there is something indescribable happening between those two from the get-go. But now the Ghost Ship is under attack - its hull splintered, its sails tattered and burnt, and the crew at risk of capture. Overall it was too long and far too slow and tried to focus on several generations of women which made it very long-winded. The Ghost Ship by Kate Mosse is the third book in the brilliant The Burning Chambers - The saga of the Reydon-Joubert family.
