About this deal

For season 18, the disc for Logopolis erroneously contains the rehearsal scripts for Earthshock instead of the scripts for this story. Instead, the lost episodes are represented by photo reconstructions combined with beautifully cleaned up soundtracks which were recorded off air and preserved by dedicated fans. This was one of the rare examples of a companion relationship feeling honest and earned, even if you watch all six parts in one sitting, as opposed to over the course of six weeks as originally aired.

The comfortable back and forth as seen through the first and second season especially is a testament to the superb writing as well as its lead actors. Wer so wie ich ein großer Fan der Serie ist, sollte sich nicht davon abschrecken lassen das es ein Import ist. The extras are mostly what has featured on the DVDs so if you have them as I do you don't gain much here. From the rather blobby mire beasts on Arridia, to the not quite convincing American accents at the Empire State Building, to rather silly and OTT monsters at the haunted house, and the rather unconvincing Doctor duplicate, this felt a bit like a Dalek cash-in. Even if the budget had somehow allowed for the stretch of animating the two episodes (it doesn’t – Richard Bignell’s been clear enough about that. Our second Dalek story of the Season The Chase is also not particularly strong but is thoroughly entertaining. Offering alternative opinions are Janet Fielding, Wendy Padbury and Sarah Sutton, who have a wonderful dynamic together. In this noteworthy two-part adventure, the Doctor actually sleeps through the TARDIS materialising, and even after landing on the planet Dido, he wants nothing more than another nap. Rediscovering The Urge to Live - The team behind the reconstruction explain how it was put together.

If that had been the second ever serial of Doctor Who instead of The Dead Planet, I think it’s fair to say the Beeb might not have let them go beyond 13 episodes. It gives us a healthy dose of Daleks, an insane scheme on their part, a true feeling of hopelessness, then victory (and even romance). Tales of Isop - Featuring William Russell, Maureen O'Brien, Martin Jarvis, Verity Lambert, Richard Martin, John Wood (Designer) and Sonia Markham (Make-up Designer). On the dark side, you’ve got the viking raiding party that assaults and traumatises a woman in the village. Picture restoration has again been completed by Peter Crocker/ SVS and they have done a superb job especially in the context of the age of the material.

They’ve been rather craftily filled in an unexpected but seamless way… All of which is leaving out our one remaining thought – can we have the Monk back, please?
