Used books have different signs of use and might not include supplemental materials such as CDs, Dvds, Access Codes, charts or any other extra material. Has the same healthy attitude of seriousness mixed with irreverence as the Greeks themselves; every page crammed with hilarious, minutely detailed strip drawings. The myths accurately portray the adventures of Pandora, Arion, Orpheus, Heracles, Daedalus, Perseus, Theseus and Arachne. This irreverently funny book is just right for children 9 and up who shy away from anything that smacks of schoolwork and can be a bridge to territory they might otherwise never visit. Panels and spreads brimming with color, decorative detail, and nonstop action make each tale a pleasure to look at, and speech bubbles add modern humor. The stories include ‘Orpheus and Eurydice’, ‘Theseus and the Minotaur’, ‘Perseus and the Gorgon’s Head’.

Marcia William's introduction to Greek mythology is wonderfully illustrated and bursting with color, its stories of gods and heroes are fun, like The 12 Tasks of Hercules, and some are genuinely sad, like the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. The artist also found pleasure in creating CHARLES DICKENS AND FRIENDS, which presents five retellings of classic Dickens tales. The author does a nice job of preserving the original myth while still simplifying it enough for young readers to understand. The illustrations and dialogue within the illustrations was funny and definitely made it more interesting to me.

I think this is better for children to read by themselves and I’d go for ‘The Orchard Book of Greek Myths’ if you’re going to read to the kids. Every year King Minos would tell King Agues to send 7 boys and 7 girls to Crete to be killed by the Minotaur. The Greek myths are among the greatest, most exciting stories ever told and feature some of the best loved heroes and heroines. This is a great resource in the classroom for children to start to understand a topic they may be covering. Reason for Reading: All my readers should know by now that mythology is a favourite subject of mine, especially Greek. In this book you'll find eight favourite myths - the stories of Theseus, conqueror of the dreaded Minotaur; the mighty Heracles and his twelve tasks; the tragic lovers, Orpheus and Eurydice; Perseus, the Gorgon-slayer; the musician Arion and his rescue by the dolphins; Pandora and her little box of horrors; the feather-clad fliers, Daedalus and Icarus; and the weaving contest between Ariachne and the goddess Athene.

Or Zeus takes revenge on Prometheus, and extinguishes every spark of fire on earth, causing the hungry populace to eat nothing but salad. It was enjoyable for me to get a refresher on some of the myths I've heard about before as well as learn new myths. This book would be good to read to a class and also use children to act the story out as a role play and also to read along acting as the characters so they could read the speech bubbles. Evaluation of Literary Elements: Though it may not be the most thorough retelling of these myths, I do think that the comic-book style of these myths would interest a child. Consideration of Instructional Application: This book, as I said, would be great for introducing graphic novels to children. Discover the magical myths and legendary heroes of Ancient Greece with award-winning author-illustrator Marcia Williams.
