If you're looking for the crème de la crème of the fan world, then a Dyson bladeless fan is perhaps the most aspirational buy. Well-executed design, innovative oh-so-stylish bladeless design, and powerful multifunctional performance mean a Dyson fan easily stands out from the crowd. However, there's rarely a bargain without a catch, and the downside to the Honeywell Turbo Force Power Fan's affordable price point is its intrusive noise and limited functionality. The two most energy-efficient fans we've tested are the Duux Whisper Flex Ultimate Fan which uses just 3 watts of power on its lowest settings, rising to 32 watts on its highest settings, and the MeacoFan 1056 Air Circulator, which uses 9.5 watts on low and just 23.5 watts on its super-powerful highest setting thanks to its DC motor. The Vortex Air bladeless fan withholds many of the same features as this Dyson heater & cooler (AM09). Lastly, a panel of testers sit in a room kept at 30 degrees with each fan for half an hour and assess how comfortable it makes them (yes, really). Every model is then scored according to its performance, ease of use, design and product information. Air flow isn’t particularly fast. At full speed, just 15cm from the grille, we measured air at 1.9m/s, but the wind speed was unmeasurable by 1m. As this is a personal fan that physically cools the air, the evaSMART doesn’t need to blow air any faster. In fact, at times it felt too cold sitting in front of this cooler. We measure each fan’s noise levels to find the quietest models for dozing off to, as well as its energy efficiency to find out how affordable it is to run, and its oscillation range to see how well the fan distributes air around a room. Thanks to its DC motor – part of the reason this fan requires a little more investment – it also delivers that cooling airflow almost silently. Whilst it can't quite beat the Duux Whisper Flex Ultimate Fan on the 'virtually silent' front, it comes very close, especially when you consider what powerful airflow this fan can dish out. There's no hint of the dreaded droning noise that's associated with most fans, instead the only noise is of gushing air. Our one minor complaint is that this fan could do with a more gentle speed; all speed options are quite intense. Sliding the plastic disc up and down lets you point the air flow where you want it. There’s also a 90-degree oscillation mode, so you can sweep the air around. The benefits of the new system are three-fold. First, you can sit in a bubble of cooling air; secondly, on oscillation mode, the fan doesn’t blow bits of paper on your desk everywhere; third, the fan is far smaller than Dyson’s previous desktop models.There are a couple of negatives to note. The first is that the power cable is a little short at 1.4 m. Some users may require an extension cord. The fan itself is also made from lightweight plastic. While this aids portability, it’s not the most robust on the market. Like Princess’ traditional tower fan below, this connects to a user-friendly app and is compatible with voice control. It also feels sturdy and has a good range of air strengths. It's not tall though, and it only oscillates 50 degrees, meaning it works best when positioned nearby and directed at one or two people. The problem with fans is that they’re great during the hot weather but just take up space when it gets cold. Things don’t have to be that way, as the Princess Smart Heating and Cooling Tower shows. As the name fully describes, this is a tower fan that also has a heating mode. To top things off it even has a smart app. Alongside these controls, there’s a timer (one, two or four hours) and oscillation mode (65° angle). If you don’t want to walk to the fan, then there’s also a remote control that attaches magnetically when not in use.
As well as a fan function, this model can be used to fill your home with your favourite aromas. There’s a built-in essential oil tray. Simply add a few drops and your home will soon be filled with your favourite scent. The Vortex Air Cleanse is an affordable option compared to its competitors, providing good value for money. As we have mentioned already, these fans are far more stylish and much safer. Choosing the right one for your needs is quite difficult because there are a lot of them to choose from. We love that it has 10 fan speeds (more than any unit on this list) that you can adjust whether you choose to have cold or hot air. The “Jet Focus Control” has two modes: One allows you to have the air shoot off in a long, narrow path that is perfect for warming one person, and the other lets you expand it to a wider path when you want it to reach more people, and warm up the room more evenly. Plus, it turns (oscillates) as much as 70 degrees, so you can really control the airflow. There are no controls on the fan’s body, so it’s very important to keep hold of the remote control. That would be easier if the control could be attached or stored on the fan’s body, in a similar way to Dyson fans, where the remotes magnetically attach to the top.
