It’s certain to inspire you onwards with your Wainwright Bagging journey!The Southern Fells – Walking The Wainwrights Adventurer Nic peeks out of her tent during a wild camp in Eskdale at sunset I walked the 29 North Western Wainwrights over three days in June 2021 starting at the Rosthwaite General Store bus stop in Rosthwaite and hiking Castle Crag first. The route ended with Sale Fell and finished at the Dubwath (Junction with A66) bus stop in Dubwath. The whole North Western fells route was 73.9km in length.
With that said, most people take their time when walking them as it is a much better experience to take in all of the beauty that the Lake District has to offer. The fells are perfect places for creative souls; there is so much to sketch, photograph and write about; countless amounts of people have created beautiful works from their inspiration of the fells. The Wainwrights are a group of 214 fells (hills and mountains) in the Lake District. They are all connected by featuring in Alfred Wainwright’s famous guidebooks: A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells. The guidebooks have been in continuous publication since the first book was released in 1955 (the last was published in 1966 – they took him many years to write) and have sold over two million copies. Start with the smaller peaks such as Castle Crag, Latrigg and Loughrigg and work you way up to the big ones.Though not easy, bagging the Wainwrights is a popular pastime in part because the majority of the peaks are relatively accessible. A person who summits all the Wainwrights doesn’t have a special name, and in fact, Alfred Wainwright probably never considered that doing so would become a significant feat to others. However, it is a popular pastime and if you have completed all of the Wainwrights, you can apply to be listed on a register held by the Long Distance Walkers Association. Also included are overview details of Steve Birkinshaw’s then-record-breaking sub-seven-day Wainwrights run in 2014 – current record holder Sabrina Verjee completed the round in under six days. Anyone who knows me knows that one of my favourite things to do is plan peak bagging routes.
