About this deal

As you can see it's very similar to the DadiTwins' original submission. In fact the only noticeable differences are that he has a parrot rather than a seagull for company, and he's not needed to use his trousers for a sail on the raft. There are lots of details in this set and they include 2 snakes. A yellow swim tube is also here too. There’s a nice clear beer bottle and there’s a starfish too. This set does sport ten palm fronds in three shades of green, which is quite nice for a set of this size. It’s definitely the parts highlight of the set, especially if you can rustle up the missing pieces for a third palm.

LEGO IDEAS 40566 Ray the Castaway is a really neat and cool set that has lots of playable features. Although its small, LEGO fans can recreate many castaway scenes on the desert island. These include cooking with the campfire, exploring all the small animals nearby, resting in the shelter, enjoying the shade under the nice palm trees or exploring the oceans with the raft. Overall, this is a nice set. The complete set took about 45 minutes to build and that includes sorting the pieces too. With many new sets launching during its period of availability it should not be too difficult to find something to buy to acquire it. Oh, and MASSIVE shoutout to my wife for building and photographing the set while I’m away in Billund! Finally we should talk about that roof. This was the first time in a long while that I broke a set during construction while trying to get those clips attached to that central bar. I attribute this to the new, more open design of Ray’s hut compared to Daditwins’ submitted design. Here, we have already added a yellow starfish on the blue base as well as a clear bottle in the ocean. Overall, I think this is a very charming GWP. There’s plenty of fun details, and I like the fishing rod, and plenty of marine life like starfish, eels (?), a crab, fish and a parrot to keep Ray company. No seagull unlike the original design but the parrot works thematically. Realistic details – The desert island model features a buildable shelter, raft and palm trees, plus a Ray minifigure and parrot, crab and 2 fish figures

The raft has a pole with a white flag. There’s a rope where it can attach to the desert island as well. Two studs are on the raft so that you can put 1-2 minifigures on it. Ray the Castaway by Dadi Twins has won the LEGO Group’s official “ Do You Want To Go to the Seaside?” contest! On the side of the shelter, there’s a fishing road with a fish that is caught. A yellow cup is near the shelter for Ray to sip on. The raft can be attached to the shelter too through the rope.

More To Do

As a result, it holds very true to a lot of the charm and creativity that made it a winning entry, even if that means that there are no new or exclusive parts to be found here. It’s a cute little creation that tells so much of a story in so little real estate, and the fact there’s only one minifigure is part of the point. One of the only changes that is a downgrade is the seagull has come out in place of a parrot.

Winners Announcement – We’ll share the Grand Prize winner and five Runner Up winners here on LEGO Ideas no later than May 31st, 2021! Gift idea – This 243-piece model measures over 5 in. (14 cm) high, 7 in. (19 cm) wide and 5 in. (13 cm) deep, and makes a fun gift for adults or any LEGO® enthusiast The twins, Dave and Deigo have submitted their latest creation to the LEGO Group’s official “ Do You Want To Go to the Seaside?” contest – the submission with the most vote gets made into a set.

Real Value [4]– Plenty of October releases makes this good value as you’ll likely end up getting one

I’m still trying to make up my mind on the SOS written in the sand. I do think it’s a fun, creative addition to a set like this. But the snakes feel out of place for me. That said, I don’t have an alternative part that would’ve worked better. That said, Ray the Castaway is a bit of an exception, as it didn’t go through the typical 10,000 votes and review round process, as it was the winning entry in the Do You Want To Go To The Seaside LEGO Ideas competition, following in the footsteps of recent LEGO Ideas GWPs like 40533 Cosmic Cardboard Adventures, 40448 Vintage Car and 40487 Sailboat Adventures, Ray is fortunate to have been castaway on a very pleasant-looking island, with lush vegetation, colourful animals and vibrant blue sea surrounding it. He's been able to fashion a shelter from available resources and looks to have an abundant supply of fish for sustenance. An SOS is spelt out on the beach, using a pair of 28588 SNAKE W/ 3.2 SHAFT NO. 1 and a lifebuoy, hoping to attract attention from above. You first start building the base that consists of blue, beige and green colors. The blue represents the ocean while the beige represents the sand. The green represents some of the grass. Dumping out the contents, you get a instructions booklet and five bags of pieces. Note that they are not numbered. However, its not unusual as this set isn’t that big. You continue with the desert island by building the shelter and adding more details. Now, we have the fishing rod with the fish, a yellow cup, cooking pan and a small fire.
