About this deal

The write: "for those seeking the battered crunch of a more traditional seaside treatment, Anstruther’s Wee Chippie arguably trumps the queues and awards of its more famous, vocal neighbour along the harbour." Giddy Gannet Picture: Giddy Gannet

It is well worth it to stroll down the charming cobbled streets lined up behind the miniature harbour, with homes that formerly belonged to fishermen and shipowners. As further evidence of Lundin Links’ prehistoric significance, in 1965, a storm uncovered a Pictish cemetery on Massney Braes, overlooking Lundin Links Beach. Archaeological excavations revealed that several of those buried there had been given elaborate send-offs so perhaps were important in the Pictish Kingdom of Fib, later known as the Kingdom of Fife. The East Neuk of Fife has all the cute coastal charm you could ever need! Read on for my complete guide to the Fife fishing villages of East Neuk… I know 40 square miles doesn’t sound like much, but the area between Earlsferry and Kingsbarns has more than enough going on to keep visitors entertained for a full 2-3 day trip.

Area details

Enjoy some lunch or home baking at the museum in the family-run Harvest Mouse Tearoom, then finish your visit with a stroll over Bishops Bridge, listening to the babble of Ceres Burn below.

This post issponsored by Museums Galleries Scotland As always, all content, opinions & chaotic behaviour are my own.As with many places along the Fife coast, the easiest way to visit the East Neuk is by car. Each village is easily accessible and in my experience offers plenty of car parking. The drive is very straightforward, especially if you’re near the M90, where you’ll then link to the A917. From there follow the incredibly well sign-posted Fife Coastal Road which connects the East Neuk villages. Isle of May Boat Trips: A great way to see the Isle of May and its flora and fauna is by taking a boat trip with osprey, a big ten metre Humber Rib which can hold up to 12 passengers. Osprey can take you on a 2-3 hour trip around the island or a shorter voyage around the island to see the puffins, seals, sea cliffs and coastal views from the boat. Find out More Nicholson’s Sweet & Ice Cream Shop, Pittenweem – for some old-school sweeties or proper Italian-style ice-cream from the institution that is Jannetta’s Gelateria, pop into Pittenweem and visit this colourful wee gem of a shop. Find out more here. For those who don’t have their own rolling home but would like to try van life in the East Neuk, hire your own van from Go Forth or Fife Camper Hire. Finally, if you do choose to stay off-grid, please remember to be considerate of the local community and wildlife: that means take away your rubbish and don’t dump waste water. From Elie walk the Fife Coastal Path to St Monans, passing Ruby Bay, named after the garnets that were once mined there (keep an eye out, you might find a fortune!) the Elie Lighthouse and the quirky Ladies Tower at Sauchar Point, a changing room built for Lady Anstruther in the 1700s so she could bathe in the Forth. The tower has fab views over the Forth.
