They are suitable for professional and amateur artists, and are ideal for drawing, illustration, Sumi-e etc. If you want to be able to create flat washes easier, more predictability, then Kuretake might be a better choice.

These Gansai Tambi watercolors dry with a more matte finish but are not at all chalky, as some more student grade alternatives would be. When the pans are dry, they dry to a semi gloss and you can put your finger on it and you won't pick up any paints. It is a solid type of watercolor pressed into pans that can be prepped and cleaned up quickly and easily dissolves in water.The company has been producing quality art supplies for over 100 years and their reputation is important to them. If you are new to watercolor, I’d suggest you try the smallest set first to see if you enjoy using them and will get your money’s worth over time. I am not great at watercoloring, though, so would love to see some video tutorials on how to use them.

My favorite part of getting the largest set Kuretake offer, ( the 36 colors), are those beautiful metallics. I am not worried about it personally since the paint is so pigmented, it’ll be a long time before I can run out of even my favorite colors.The distinguishing difference is for Kissho, there's a tendency for the colours to dry with a hard edge. Most of the time I try out a product in a smaller range to decide if I will like them, before purchasing a larger set. Water-based pigment paint can be highly opaque when used solely as a gouache but can also become more transparent depending on the amount of water added for dilution. With most metallic and shimmery style watercolors in cake or pan form, like Twinkling H2O’s (which I do enjoy! Both Kuretake and Kissho offer the cardboard box sets but the Kissho seems to be the only one that sells the plastic palette box set.
